Description

A sturdy, buttery sugar cookie designed specifically for cut-out shapes. These cookies hold their definition during baking and provide a smooth surface for icing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until just combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients on low speed until a dough forms.
  6. Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.
  9. Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets and bake for 8 to 12 minutes, or until edges are barely golden.
  10. Allow to cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
