Description

A savory twist on the classic French toast, this baked casserole combines salty custard-soaked bread with melted cheese and fresh toppings for a hearty brunch.


Ingredients

  • 6 cups cubed challah or sourdough bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1.5 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup salsa
  • 1 ripe avocado, sliced
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350F (175C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  2. Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, and black pepper until smooth.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes and stir gently until all pieces are thoroughly coated.
  5. Transfer the soaked bread into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top of the bread.
  7. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the casserole rest for 5 minutes.
  9. Top with fresh salsa and sliced avocado immediately before serving.
