Soft and buttery sugar cookies designed for Halloween decorating. These treats hold their shape perfectly and provide a delicious base for spooky icing designs.

- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups powdered sugar (for icing)
- 2–3 tablespoons milk or water (for icing)
- Food coloring (orange, purple, green, black)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350F (175C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Cream the softened butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl until pale and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients on low speed, mixing until just combined.
- Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Roll the chilled dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut out spooky shapes using cookie cutters and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are very lightly golden.
- Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Mix powdered sugar with milk/water and food coloring until smooth, then pipe designs onto the cooled cookies.
